Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
New research reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these drugs should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
